The iPad 3 has already been jailbroken untethered by three hackers using their unmentioned exploits. The first one was MuscleNerd, the second jailbreak done by German hacker i0n1c and the third feat was achieved by chpwn. Now another addition comes in! Paul Griffin (@phoenixdev) found another vulnerability in iOS 5.1 which leads to a fourth untethered jailbreak of the iPad 3.

It took him only a week and 4.5 hours of owning iPad 3 to jailbreak it, run Cydia and SHSH. However, he says the methods he used are not for the public consumption. He is likely to give the exploit to the Chronic Dev Team who are in search for an untethered A5X jailbreak exploit.

Pod2g has pointed out that the injection vector for the other two jailbreaks (not i0n1c’s) relies on a dev account exploit. This means they need a different injection vector and are far from being ready and available to the public. However, i0n1c’s just need polishing as he is using 3 kernel bugs and 3 user land bugs.

It is unclear whether the tool will be released by him or handed over the Chornic Dev Team (for Greenpois0n) or the iPhone Dev Team (for Redsn0w). It still needs a great effort before i0n1c makes it ready for a public release.

Users who await the jailbreak exploit are recommended to save iPad 3 SHSH Blobs with the latest TinyUmberlla as Apple might release new software update soon.
